Children Born in the UK on the Graduate Route
A child born in the UK does not automatically become a British citizen simply because they were born here. If the child needs immigration permission as a dependant, the parents should make the appropriate application, particularly before travelling outside the UK.
Can a UK-Born Child Apply as a Graduate Dependant?
A child can qualify as a Graduate dependant in the circumstances permitted by the Graduate route. This includes a child born in the UK during the parent's current Student, Tier 4 (General) Student or Graduate permission, subject to the relevant requirements.
Documents to Prepare
- Child's valid passport or other identity/travel document
- Full UK birth certificate showing the names of both parents
- Graduate parent's immigration/application details
- Other parent's immigration details, where relevant
- Evidence requested as part of the online application
- Written consent from a relevant government or international scholarship agency where the specific sponsorship rule applies
- Certified translations for relevant documents not in English or Welsh, where required
Important Travel Requirement
After the Application Is Approved
If the child's application is successful, their Graduate dependant permission will end on the same date as the Graduate visa holder's permission. Successful applicants receive an eVisa as the digital record of their immigration status.
